Walks and Weekends Away

 Oxfordshire social events group

We hold a walk every Sunday, anywhere within a 35 mile radius of Oxford, and these are always very popular.

We vary the length (3 to 12 miles) and location / terrain of walk as much as possible. Many are afternoon walks of about 5-6 miles, but we also have morning walks and longer "morning and afternoon" walks , some circular and some figure of eight.

A pub lunch is sometimes included, or bring your own packed lunch. Refreshments in a pub or tea shop after the walk are popular, and provide a chance to unwind and to continue the social contact of the walk.

We have a shorter, evening walk (midweek) each week between late April and early September.

These may be followed by a club night, barbecue, pub meal or pub music evening.

We hold walking weekends away, in places such as Exmoor, the Peak District and the Lake District, which have always been great fun.

Have a look at details of our forthcoming walks!

 Dancing

Oxfordshire social events groupWe love dancing!

In the last year, we have had a Christmas disco along with a delicious buffet. We also go to some public dinner dances and have had a series of our own monthly discos, some of them themed.

A number of us also go to various public dance events in and around Oxfordshire, such as barn dances in Haddenham, 60s/70s nights, Northern Soul Evenings and several regular dance classes - e.g.

  • Cajun
  • Jive
  • Ceroc
  • Tango

Some of these events are advertised in our Bulletin.

You don't need to bring a partner to any of these events. It's perfectly OK to come along on your own, or with friends or partners.

 Eating Out

Oxfordshire social events groupOur gastronomic visits to restaurants and hotels offer a good variety of tastes, locations and prices. We have at least one Saturday evening meal out each month, sometimes in Oxford, but also at locations as far apart as Bicester, Kidlington, Wantage or Henley. In summer, we look for the opportunity to eat "al fresco". In December, we have a Christmas Dinner at a local restaurant.

Eating may also be part of our walking and ourdancing events!

Sports and Games

We play the following sports regularly, on a social basis -

  • Tennis every Saturday (usually in the afternoon), in Oxford.
  • Badminton on a Wednesday evening, in Abingdon.

Occasionally, there is another sporting event such as Swimming.

We play (Rubber) Bridge every Wednesday evening, and Scrabble one Wednesday each month, both in Oxford. Beginners are welcome.

Cultural Activities

Our Book Group meets at various members' houses in and around Oxford, once a month. The books to be discussed are advertised in advance in our bulletin, to give people time to choose those that interest them, read them, and then come along to talk about them in an informal atmosphere. It is not essential to have finished reading the book before coming to the relevant meeting.

We also arrange many theatre and concert visits(we have a discount ticket for the Apollo in Oxford) and often go to the Oxford Playhouse (pictured left).

We arrange day trips to places of interest - e.g.

London

Stratford

various National Trust sites

National Garden Scheme gardens

We sometimes see places of cultural interest on ourwalks.

And...one of our most popular events is the Big Annual Quiz, devised by one of our members! (See Photos page).

Drinks Evenings

Oxfordshire social events groupNearly every Friday, we have a pub night, which is an evening gathering for drinks in a specified pub or hotel.

Once a month, we have a social evening at the OUP Centre, Jordan Hill, Oxford, where various games (e.g. pool, darts) are available.

  • Around twice a month, we go to The Plough at Wolvercote, where we usually meet and sit in the "library" area. (There is outside seating next to Port Meadow, which we use in summer, weather permitting!).

On other Fridays, we may visit another venue, for example -

  • Abingdon United FC social club
  • The Westwood Country Hotel, Boars Hill
  • The Red Lion, Wendlebury
  • The George Hotel, Wallingford
  • The Queen's Head, Horspath
  • The Turnpike, Yarnton
  • The King's Arms, Kidlington
  • Somewhere else!

We also have other drinks evenings, usually every month or two. Have a look at our forthcoming Pub Nights! For all drinks evenings, our host/hostess should be displaying a copy of our monthly bulletin (a coloured A4 booklet) to help you to identify them.
